St Michael's Brent Tor

Legend has it that following a battle at sea between the merchant seaman and the Devil, the Seaman prayed to his Patron Saint St Michael to save his life.

When the Devil arrived at the top of the Tor.

A bright light descended from the sky and the Archangel Michael appeared and confronted the Devil. St Michael slung the devil off the Tor onto the rocks below. The big boulder that St Michael threw still sits below the Tor. This version is dated to the 12th Century.

St Michael holds the hilltops in his care.
